Harakeke was the name given to this plant by Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. Harakeke Flax Gel is nature’s super skin hydrator, packed with high quantity of natural skin nutrients and beneficial plant sugars called polysaccarides. Harakeke is renowned for the clear polysaccharide gel exudate produced on the surface of leaves at the base of plant. The mild astringency of this gel helps control oil overproduction, which makes it an effective defence against breakouts, without stripping or scrubbing your skin. It naturally soothes, hydrates and cools, reducing puffiness and redness. It naturally promotes recovery in skin damaged from irritation, environmental stresses and late nights. Harakeke Flax Gel is our Hero ingredient which is included in all GoGirl Skincare® products.

Harakeke Flax grows up to three meters in height and its flower stalks can grow up to four meters. There are two main species of flax; Mountain Flax and Common Flax, with numerous different sub-varieties (over 300). Some have drooping leaves others grow upright and stiff and there are a wide number of colours. Harakeke Flax were used extensively by Maori for clothing, thatching and matting. Harakeke was also used by Maori as a medicinal plant to treat boils, burns, as an antiseptic for cuts and internally for the relief of diarrhoea. Over 100 years ago in New Zealand, the strong leaf fibre of the Harakeke Flax was used to produce rope and linen clothing. Harakeke Flax Gel is hydrating, moisturising and healing, which is why we use it in all our skincare products. It is a natural alternative to petrochemically derived synthetic gels. In our skincare products you will see we use a very high percentage of Harakeke Flax Gel, this is to ensure that our skincare products are naturally beneficial and effective. HARAKEKE FLAX GEL SOURCE AND EXTRACTION

Given the volume of the Harakeke Flax Gel we use, we source our own Harakeke Flax Gel so we are able to control quality and ensure we always have sufficient supply. The gel is removed from the Harakeke Flax plant using a special technique that does not harm or stress the plant and makes the plant grow and thrive.
